What Not To Vacuum: Tips For Keeping Your Vacuum In Top Shape

Cleaning up a home is one of the most essential tasks in our everyday lives. We may use various methods, techniques, and timings, but one thing is certain: vacuuming the floor is necessary. The vacuum cleaner, though not a modern invention, has been around since the early 20th century and has become a staple in virtually every home.

Know Your Vacuum's Limits

Despite their efficiency, vacuum cleaners aren’t meant to handle everything. Using them on the wrong items can damage the machine and reduce its lifespan. Let’s go over what you should and shouldn’t vacuum, and why a Dreame vacuum is a must-have in your home.

Broken Glass

It’s tempting to vacuum shattered glass, but resist the urge. Glass can tear vacuum bags or damage the insides of bagless vacuums. Instead, carefully sweep up larger pieces and use a damp cloth, paper towel, or even bread to pick up smaller shards.

Water

Unless you own one of our wet & dry vacuum cleaners, never vacuum water or any liquid. Mixing water with dust and dirt inside the vacuum can cause mildew growth or electrical failure, making the vacuum unserviceable. Use a microfibre cloth to soak up water instead.

Wet Foods

Just like before, unless you own one of our wet & dry vacuum cleaners, spilled soup, soggy cereal, wet coffee grounds, or sauces should never go near your vacuum. These can create a mess inside and damage the machine. Use a microfiber cloth to absorb liquids and pick up chunks with your hand or a broom.

Ash and Fine Dust

Vacuum cleaners aren’t designed for fine particles like fireplace ash or fine dust. These can clog the vacuum or be expelled back into the air. Sweep up fine particles with a broom or use damp coffee grounds to lump them together for easier cleaning.

Makeup

Spilled makeup on a carpet can be disastrous if vacuumed. It can stain carpets or melt inside the vacuum, creating a bigger mess. Pick up as much makeup as possible and use a stain remover for any remaining residue.

While vacuum cleaners are incredibly efficient, they aren’t meant to handle everything. Knowing what not to vacuum helps keep your machine running smoothly and ensures a cleaner home.
